Long overshadowed by the glitzier resorts to the west, the Eastern Algarve is now coming into its own as a prized, more select holiday destination. Our base, Tavira, was a Roman town and has a long and interesting history. We have included an extremely interesting day out: to Rabida Monastery, where Columbus planned his historic voyage together with the monks. Nearby lies Caravelle Wharf, with full-size replicas of the three ships - the Nina, the Pinto, and the Santa Maria. These replicas sailed the Atlantic in 1992, to mark the 500th Anniversary of Columbus' Voyage. We also take you to the astonishing town of El Rocio, on the edge of the Donana Natural Park.
